Xylitol
XYLITOL, a pentapolyhydric alcohol, is one
of the normal metabolic intermediates in the important non-glycolysis
systems of human body. It exhibits a strong anti-ketogenic effect,
and metabolizes irrespective of insulin. For pharmaceutical use,
it is used in an infusion for patients with abnormal carbohydrate
metabolism or for insulin shock treatment because it has no influence
on either the glycogen synthesis or the blood sugar level of diabetes
mellitus.
The additional properties of XYLITOL are that
it is chemically stable and only slightly hygroscopic, is soluble
in water, and possesses a cool and refreshing taste as sweet as
sugar. Another eminent property of XYLITOL is that it does not promote
tooth decay so that it is used in toothpaste, sugarless confectioneries
such as chewing gum, candy and chocolate.
